Understanding Nerve Hydrodissection

Nerve hydrodissection is a minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided procedure that uses fluid injection to gently separate compressed or entrapped nerves from surrounding tissues. This technique can provide relief from conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, and other nerve entrapments.

Simple & Minimally Invasive

Unlike surgery, nerve hydrodissection requires minimal preparation. Most patients can resume normal activities within 24 hours. The procedure uses local anesthesia and real-time ultrasound guidance for precision.

Before Your Procedure

Preparation Guidelines

  • No fasting required — eat normally
  • Continue most medications — discuss any blood thinners with us
  • Wear comfortable clothing — easy access to the treatment area
  • Consider bringing a driver — especially if treating the lower leg

If Using Blood Thinners

Please discuss with our office before your appointment if you take:

  • Warfarin (Coumadin)
  • Eliquis, Xarelto, Pradaxa
  • Aspirin (daily use)
  • Plavix (clopidogrel)

During Your Procedure

1

Ultrasound Imaging

Dr. Buchheit's team locates the affected nerve using high-resolution ultrasound

2

Local Numbing

A small amount of local anesthetic is used to numb the injection site

3

Hydrodissection

Fluid is gently injected to separate the nerve from surrounding tissues

After Your Procedure

First 24 Hours

  • Light rest — avoid strenuous activity
  • Keep area clean and dry
  • Try to avoid ice — this may slow down the healing process
  • Take acetaminophen for pain relief—try to avoid ibuprofen or Naprosyn and other anti-inflammatories

Days & Weeks After

  • Resume normal activities — usually within 24 hours
  • Some patients feel immediate relief
  • Full benefits may take days to weeks
  • Follow-up visits as scheduled

What's Normal After Nerve Hydrodissection

Mild soreness or a "full" sensation at the injection site is normal and usually resolves within a day or two. Some patients experience temporary numbness in the area from the local anesthetic. Contact us if you have increasing pain, fever, or redness at the site.
