Immune Stimulation and the New Science of Regenerative Therapies
by Thomas E. Buchheit, MD
"Inflammation can be good. Harness it to heal."
One of the first books published on regenerative medicine for patients, offering clear explanations of how PRP, stem cells, and autologous conditioned serum work to heal painful joints and nerves.
Healing Joints and Nerves gives readers the tools to treat painful osteoarthritis and neuropathy by harnessing the body's natural healing mechanisms.
With clear explanations and a patient-centered approach, Dr. Buchheit shares insights into common regenerative therapies, including platelet-rich plasma, stem cells, and autologous conditioned serum. These treatments don't work by fighting inflammation. They work by stimulating the immune system and resolving it.
In this book, one of the first to be published on the topic, Dr. Buchheit explains that the medical profession is at a watershed moment in understanding how inflammation and immune activation promote healing after injury and provide the foundation for pain relief through regenerative therapies.
Who This Book Is For:
The book covers the science and practical applications of regenerative medicine in patient-friendly language.
Understanding the biological processes behind osteoarthritis, neuropathy, and chronic pain.
How immune cells actually reduce pain and why inflammation can be harnessed for healing.
How PRP works, what conditions it treats, and what to expect from treatment.
The science, promise, and limitations of stem cell treatments, separating fact from hype.
Understanding treatments like the Regenokine® Program and how they differ from other approaches.
Practical strategies you can use alongside or instead of medical treatments.
What leading physicians, researchers, and practitioners are saying.
"With Healing Joints and Nerves, Dr. Buchheit has accomplished what no author before him has done. He has explained the wonders and complexities of regenerative medicine in clear, scientifically accurate language. His book delves into the history, cuts through the myths, and serves as a trusted source for patients seeking to learn more about this exciting new field of medicine."
"Dr. Buchheit's book captures the paradigm shift that is defining the future of arthritis and neuropathy care. With thoughtfully constructed chapters, he describes the crucial role of immune cells in reducing pain and the mechanisms behind treatments such as platelet-rich plasma, stem cells, and autologous conditioned serum. His book is the gold standard for anyone who wants to learn more about regenerative medicine."
"As a physician-scientist who has studied stem cells for decades, I congratulate Dr. Buchheit on this major achievement. He equips readers with self-guided ways to reduce chronic pain and the knowledge to choose wisely if they pursue stem cells or other regenerative therapies. Importantly, he highlights the strong links between regenerative medicine and our natural healing abilities."
"Healing Joints and Nerves bridges the gap between rigorous pain science and real-world healing in a way few books achieve. As a translational pain scientist, I appreciate Dr. Buchheit's clear, evidence-based explanation of regenerative therapies. As an athlete who has personally benefitted from these approaches, I value how thoughtfully he integrates science, clinical insight, and lived experience."
"Healing Joints and Nerves is one of the most grounded, honest explanations of regenerative medicine I've read. Dr. Buchheit methodically explains why joints and nerves fail, why many conventional treatments fall short, and what actually supports long-term healing. A must-read for anyone serious about understanding pain, recovery, and the future of musculoskeletal care."

Dr. Thomas Buchheit completed his residency in anesthesiology and perioperative care at the University of California, San Francisco, and his fellowship in interventional pain management at Wake Forest University.
In 2010, he moved his practice to Duke University, where he served as Chief of Pain Medicine and began studying nerve injury pain and the mechanisms behind regenerative therapies. He has led several studies funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.
In 2025, Dr. Buchheit founded Triangle Regen Medicine and Biologics Center in Chapel Hill, NC, to bring a wide range of regenerative therapies to patients. He continues to serve as an adjunct associate professor at Duke and works with scientists at the Center for Translational Pain Medicine.
